Q: What is hydrogen?
| Hydrogen is the simplest and most abundant element in the universe. In its gaseous state, hydrogen is tastless, colourless, odourless, and non-toxic. When burned, hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce water and considerable energy as heat. Using hydrogen as a fuel eliminates the emission of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, and therefore at point-of-use does not contribute to global warming. |
Q: Why hydrogen?
It is in Youth Hydrogen' opinion that... ...as an energy carrier, hydrogen can replace all forms of final energy in use today and provide energy services to all sectors of the economy. The fundamental attraction of hydrogen is its environmental advantage over fossil fuels. At point of use, hydrogen can be burned in such a way as to produce no harmful emissions, and when generated via electrolysis using British Columbia's abundant hydroelectric power, it can be produced without emitting any climate-destabilizing greenhouse gases. This forms the basis of a truly sustainable energy system: the hydrogen economy. |
Q: How is hydrogen produced?
As an energy carrier, hydrogen can be produced in a variety of ways. Biomass, methanol, coal, natural gas, and gasoline can release hydrogen by the application of heat; bacteria and algae can produce it via photosynthesis; and electricity can be used to convert water into oxygen and hydrogen. This last method, known as electrolysis, is the most preferable production mechanism. Renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric provide the electricity needed for electrolysis, and produce very few - even zero - emissions. |
